The Shimano Light Gripper has a reputation for being useful for horse mackerels, hairtail and Japanese common squid, and even slippery squid. Some anglers who have used it call it “the best product of the year, to put it bluntly. Various manufacturers have released a variety of “fish scissors,” but we would like to find out what kind of product the Light Gripper, which some say is the definitive version, is.

Horse mackerels are CT scanned and converted into data. Pursuit of the ideal blade shape
Many manufacturers have released fish scissors, commonly known as “fish scissors,” in a variety of shapes and at different prices. However, expert anglers say that while they are a necessity for light game anglers, there has been no definitive model. Shimano field tester Yoshitsugu Niwa was one of those who felt this way.
So Shimano started developing a light gripper in 2024. The story goes that the development started when a Shimano developer brought back a large horse mackerel caught by Mr. Niwa for research, which was CT scanned and used in the design of the blade shape. The Light Gripper thus created can easily grab small to good-sized horse mackerels, something that has been difficult to do with fish scissors until now.
In addition, since the hardness of the flesh, size of scales, and slipperiness vary depending on the fish as well as the horse mackerel, the blades were completed by using resin and metal in key areas to prevent slipping, taking these factors into consideration.
The most distinctive feature is the “tip-cross structure.
The light gripper is characterized by its ability to firmly grab both small and large-sized horse mackerels. Therefore, the maximum width of the tip of the Light Gripper’s blade is 5.5 cm wide to accommodate the thick body width of large horse mackerel. However, when the size of the horse mackerel is small, the tip of the blade can be narrowed by crossing the tip of the blade due to the “tip-cross structure,” allowing it to grip the fish firmly.
It is also easy to grab a fallen fish (this was difficult to do with wider blades). By inserting the thin metal blade into the underside of a fallen fish’s body, the fish can be easily picked up. The blade has a wide opening to hold a fish in an instant, so the grabbing action can be done in an instant. This reduces the loss of time and is sure to lead to better fishing results.
The holster has a structure that can be washed thoroughly.
The included holster is also excellent! The holster has a simple lockable structure that can be securely fastened when stored and quickly removed when used.
In addition, the holster is designed with a large gap on the outside to make it easy to wash the inside of the holster. This prevents scales and slime from accumulating inside the holster. When carried, the inside of the holster is in contact with the angler’s clothing, so the blade portion is guarded by resin to prevent contamination.
Although this light gripper was developed for horse mackerel, it is also ideal for grabbing hairtail and root fish in offshore waters. We hope you will consider purchasing it.
